2012
As you might know, the end of the world has been predicted for 2012. In the 'Samedi Culturel' (of 30 december 2011), supplement to 'Le Temps', Cosey gives his view on this prediction: the water level of Lac Leman has risen and only the towers of Lausanne's cathedral are still visible. A disaster, yes, but apparently the survivors know how to enjoy it!

Mystery solved... competition cancelled...
Sometime ago, I asked you to solve a puzzle. In Manu Larcenet's 'L'armure du Jackolass', Larcenet thanks a few comic artists for their contribution to the album, among whom Cosey. I asked you to find Cosey's contribution, but I got no answers. Now, the mystery has been solved: there is no drawing of Cosey in the book. Cosey actually made a drawing for the album, but it was lost somewhere... so maybe we have to await a new edition of the album.

Lhahl statue - a jade version
Les Sculpteurs des Bulles have made a special edition of the Lhahl statue (in fact, all are special editions, but this one extra special): the statue with a jade look. I like it, because it is less realistic then the polychrome versions. I think this is more in the spirit of Cosey's drawings. But... there are only 4 statues available!

Interviews with Cosey (2)
An interview on swiss television, TSR. Cosey is interviewed during the news (Journal), by a surprisingly well-infromed anchorman. The interview with Cosey starts after 18.20 minutes. And don't stop watching when you see a man in white on a motor: this is a very young Cosey...

Champaka
Saturday, I visited the exposition of Cosey's Atsuko works at the Galerie Champaka in Brussels. I made some photos, that are terribly spoiled by reflections in the glass...

The front window of the Galerie.

The first page of Atsuko. Some 20 Atsuko-pages were on display on the entrance level floor, on the floor below, pages from other Cosey-albums were shown. So you could take a little walk through (Cosey) history, being amazed by the evolution of his drawing style.

Two pages from Atsuko.

Also on display were sketches and colour studies for Atsuko. These photos in particular are spoiled by reflections. Therefore, I will only show two of them, that didn't make it to the 'Special edition' of Atsuko.

You can visit the exposition at Galerie Champaka till 20 november 2011. Highly recommended!

Competition - without prizes

Recently, the french comic artist Manu Larcenet published this album 'L'armure du Jakolass'. It is a tribute to the series 'Valérian' (dutch: Ravian) by Jean Claude Mézières. In the album, Larcenet thanks some artists for their contribution to this album, and one of them is Cosey.
Now the big question of this competition: can you find the contribution made by Cosey? Please scan or copy it and send it to 'The World of Cosey' - see my contact page.
It's a competition without prizes, but you will win eternal fame as a connaisseur on this page of 'The World of Cosey'!

Atsuko Expositions

Today, the Cosey exposition at Galerie Daniel Maghen (Paris) is opened. Friday 4 november will be the official vernissage, in the presence of Cosey. For those of you who cannot visit the exposition, go to the website of Daniel Maghen and you can have a look at all the originals, among which this one...

As you know, you can also visit a Cosey exposition in Brussels (Galerie Champaka) the next few weeks (vernissage tomorrow 3 november). All quiet on the Swiss front, then? Well, on 18 november (from 17.30), Cosey will be present at the Lausanne comic store 'Librairie Raspoutine'. He will autograph the books you buy there. For the occasion, Raspoutine will publish a special 'Japanese stamp' (99 ex.).

Jonathan Autobiographie
I have received many reactions to my message of 24 october about 'Jonathan - Une autobiographie imaginaire en BD'... Agreeing with me as well as disagreeing with me. I just want to say that there seem to be a lot of readers who did not buy the Intégrales series, because they have a complete collection of Jonathan albums. For them, them 'Autobiographie imaginaire' will be a treat. And it answers my question 'why'. |

Atsuko Expo - Interview with Cosey - 'Jonathan Autobiographie'
Here are some news items I want to share with you...
First, I am happy to announce that Cosey has cooperated with me again for a 'virtual' exposition. He sent me five nice black & white drawings from Atsuko, some of them echoing Japanese woodprints. Regard my tiny exposition as a warming up for the two real expositions in Brussels and Paris.
Click here for the Atsuko Exposition

Second, an interview with Cosey can be read on the website of 'Le nouvelliste'. Of course, the subject of the interview is... Atsuko.
A last news I like to share is the publication of 'Jonathan - Une autobiographie imaginaire en BD'. It appears as a volume of the Jonathan Intégrale series. This album is simply a copy of all dossiers of the previous Intégrales... nothing new... Why did they make this album? |

Another exposition...
A few weeks ago I announced the Cosey exposition at Galerie Champaka in Brussels. Yesterday I received this invitation of Daniel Maghen, announcing a Cosey exposition in Paris... at the same time as the Brussels expo.
According to the invitation, Cosey will be present at the vernissage of 4 november (19.00 h) at the gallery of Daniel Maghen in Paris. 25 pages of Atsuko will be displayed, as well as other Cosey works.
Resumed:
Brussels - Galerie Champaka - 4 till 20 november / vernissage with Cosey 3 november 18.00 - 20.30
Paris - Galerie Daniel Maghen - 2 till 12 november / vernissage with Cosey 4 november 19h

Chinese telephone card
This chinese telephone card was sold on the internet. The Hongkong based telecom operator CNC seems to be the producer of the card, but I suspect that this card is a fraud.
Instead of using Hergé's drawing for 'Tintin in Tibet', Cosey's pastiche 'Tintin au Tibet occupé' (Tintin in occupied Tibet) was used - and I do not think this card would have passed the Chinese censors. But if it did pass and this card is an official one, then the censor is not familiar with french, and did not see the evident allusions to chinese violence in Tibet (the tracks, the tank, the burning monastery and the Chinese red star in the title).

In the french comic-fanzine Casemate number 40 (august/september 2011), Joël Callède has written a very nice article about 'Le voyage en Italie'. Jonathan news
I have two news items about Jonathan for you.
First is the announcement of a 'Jonathan - Une autobiographie imaginaire en BD' by Lombard. The album will appear in October. The announcement promises an richly illustrated album, and will give Cosey's artistic and philosophic reflections about the evolution of his work. It will also show Cosey's sources of inspiration and his working methods.

Second news item is the title of the new Jonathan album that will appear in November 2011. The title will be 'Atsuko'. A 'normal' and a special edition of the album will appear, but I have no details yet.

Claude Levenson (1938 - 2010)
Only today I learned the news that Mrs. Claude Levenson died on 13 december, in Lausanne. She was 72 years old. Mrs. Levenson was an activist for human rights, best known for her strong support of Tibetan freedom. As a journalist, she wrote many articles and books about Tibet.
Readers of Cosey's work will know the introductions she wrote for 'Celui qui mène...' and for the Intégrales. In fact, her last publication was the preface to the 5th Jonathan Intégrale, that has recently been published.
She wrote: 'Certain people see the Tibetan cause as a rearguard action of those who hold on to an idealised past against modernity led by China. But the Tibetan problem is a problem of colonialism and of oppression of a people by another country.'
The struggle for Tibetan freedom will miss her support and they way she drew attention to the cause of Tibet's oppressed people.

Message from Switzerland
I asked Cosey some questions about his 'work in progress' and about the 5th Jonathan Intégrale. I can share some great news with you!
The 15th album of Jonathan will appear in november 2011. The title of the album will be 'Atsuko' (a Japanese female name). The story will begin in Birma and will continue in a snow-covered Japan. The album (54 pages) will be published in a 'normal' edition and an edition 'grand format', that will have a dossier of 8 or 16 pages. Each edition will have a different cover; both will be published by Le Lombard. At this moment, 40 pages have already been drawn (black & white), colouring will be done after all drawings are ready.
I hope to publish some preview images of this album on this site in september/october 2011.
Coming very soon is the 5th Jonathan Intégrale. It will have the two latest stories ('Songrong' and 'Elle'), and it will have a dossier of no less than... 60 pages! So the 5th volume will have the same size as the first four Intégrales.
Appearing in January 2011 is an Intégrale of 'Le Bouddha d'Azur' (in the collection Aire Libre). Two editions will be published: a 'normal' edition and a 'numbered & signed' edition (999 ex.). This special edition will have a portrait of Lhahl on watercolour paper. |

Lhahl statue: work in progress - part 1
Here is one of the first photos of the Lhahl statue - work in
progress. This first version was discussed by Cosey, Max Gillespie (the artist) and the
president of 'Les sculpteurs de Bulles'. The final statue should be more smooth, less
realistic and detailed, more stylised, more Cosey.
And... she will have hair, I suppose!

On the website of 'Les sculpteurs de Bulles', you will

Lhahl statue: the work has started
The sculptor Max Gillespie (Les Sculpteurs
De Bulles) has started the preparatory work for the Lahl statue (see my earlier news
below).
Gillespie and Cosey have decided that the
statue will consits of two separate statues: the 'traditional' Lhahl and the 'modern'
Lhahl. The owner of the statues can choose how to put the statues together: face to face,
side by side or back to back (the original idea).
If all goes well, the statue will be available by the end
of this year.

Les Guetteurs du passé
Cosey made the book cover for 'Les Guetteurs du passé', a
novel by Yves Blanc. The book is about a historian who, in a future era, will investigate

book's author.
Yves Blanc is the driving force
behind many musical initiatives. Among others the radio show and cd collection 'La
Planète Bleue'. Cosey made cover and booklet illustrations for the Volume 3 cd of this
collection in 2005. As you see, some elements of this cover were retaken in the book
cover.

The Lhahl statue
Some more news about the Lhahl Statue.
First about its maker, Max Gillespie. Max Gillespie studied art at
Clermont Ferrand and from 2000 onwards he makes statues of comics characters. Among others
he contributes to many statues of Michel Aroutcheff. Below you see an examples of an
Aroutcheff statue of Tintin (Max sculpted the characters) and a statue of Atalante (comic
character by Crisse).

Second: Lhahl herself. The statue will show two versions
of Lhahl, a traditional and a modern version, sitting back to back in a lotus position.
The traditional Lhahl in the album sits in the lotus position, although she is shown from
a large distance (see page 54). The modern Lhahl is not shown in a lotus position in the
album - but look at this image (used on a Christmas card for Raspoutine comics shop in
Lausanne).

Cosey, 'Le Bouddha d'Azur' and 'Les
Sculpteurs de Bulles'
The year 2010 starts with an interesting announcement of
'Les Sculpteurs de Bulles'. This is an association that wants to produce statues of comics
heroines... in this case Lhahl, one of the main characters in 'Le Bouddha d'Azur'.

The idea is to make a statue combining the traditional
and the modern Lhahl, both sitting in a Lotus position.
To get the project started, they need us! Please read
their message. The original message is French; the English translation is made by me.
Cosey,

Cosey,
'Le Bouddha d'Azur' and 'Les Sculpteurs de Bulles'
The association 'Les Sculpteurs De Bulles', specialists of the production of statues of comics
heroines, wants to produce an extraordinary piece, taken from Bernard Cosey's 'Le Bouddha d'Azur',
by the end of 2010.
The statue will be a representation of
two versions of the character Lhahl, sitting in the lotus position, back to back. One version
shows Lhahl in a contemporary version - a vision of the modern Tibetan woman - as represented in
the pages 74 till 78 of part 2 of 'Le Bouddha d'Azur, when she is discussing with Porridge; the
other version shows Lhahl in the version 'Avatar Tulku', a living representation of the
traditional Tibetan heritage, the Bouddhist avatar, incarnated memory of the Tibetan culture,
dressed in her traditional garment - as represented on page 54 of part 2.
The edition of this exceptional piece, created by Max Gillespie,
will consist of 40 pieces. The height of this polychrome resin statue, made out of multiple
moulds, will be approximately 30 cm.
Sales price by subscription will be 800 euros. The public sales
price without subscription will be 1100 euros.
'Les Sculpteurs De Bulles' will start the production of this
pieces when 20 subscribers are found. They will be asked to pay the amount in 3 payments, with 2
to 3 months intervals. The payments will be used to pay for the copyrights, the sculptor and the
production - stretched over time as to avoid the subscibers to pay the total amount at once.
At this moment, 4 subscribers have indicated they want to
participate in this extraordinary adventure, in cooperation with a serious association and an
author, who has acquired through the years and by his art an incomparable notoriety.
'Les Sculpteurs De Bulles' and Bernard Cosey would be happy to
have you as future buyers of this exceptional piece, that will become a quality reference in the
world of ParaBD, like the other statues of Max Gillespie.
