BD Fil & Derib

2016_09_19_derib

At the Lausanne comic festival BD Fil, swiss artist Derib was the honorary guest. Derib is mostly known for his series Yakari and Buddy Longway, but he has made many more beautiful comics in the last 50 years. As most of you will know, Cosey started his career as a comics artist as an apprentcie of Derib. Our swiss correspondent found this portrait of Derib, by Cosey, on expo in Lausanne.

La grande aventure du Journal Tintin

2016_09_19_tintin_a

In my previous message I wrote about the album ‘La grande aventure du Journal Tintin’. Next to eight pages from ‘L’espace blue entre les nuages’ you can find this image, taken from ‘À la recherche de Peter Pan. With a curious text: ‘Great! This is the famous stock of captain Haddock’ (my translation). In the original album, Melvin Woodworth finds ‘Rye bread, dried meat, chocolate, Fendant… what’s this? Pear brandy!!!’.

I suspect someone at Lombard wants to be funny…

Lombard 70 years

2016_09_08_tintin

This year, Le Lombard celebrates its 70th birthday. It all started with the edition of the Journal Tintin (and Kuifje Weekblad) – the first issue appeared on 26 september 1946. From 1975, Journal Tintin published the Jonathan comics, and later on ‘À la recherche de Peter Pan’.  Ans as you know, Le Lombard is the publisher of many albums by Cosey.

To celebrate its 70 years, Le Lombard publishes ‘La Grande Aventure du Journal Tintin’, in cooperation with Moulinsart. It is a massive album of 777 pages, covering the history of the Journal Tintin from 1946 until 1988 (the year the Journal Tintin ceased to exist). Cosey is present in the album with 8 pages taken from ‘L’espace bleu entre les nuages’.

Le Siffleur de Bulles

2016_08_25_siffleur

Le Siffleur de Bulles‘ is a new site dedicated to comics. On the site, they have started the first episode of a series about stories by Cosey. The first one is about ‘Sur’l’île’, one of the short stories of the album ‘Une maison de Frank L. Wright’. We look forward to the next articles! (By the way, you can also find an article about the Mickey album on the site).

To be expected…

In recent interviews, I read that Cosey was working on a new album. I asked him, and he confirmed it. What I know about the new album:

  • it is planned to appear at the end of 2017
  • it will be published by Futuropolis
  • it will be a black & white album; Cosey’s first if we don’t count his very first comics. Some of his albums (most recently ‘À la recherche de Peter pan’) are published in special editions that are black & white, so you can already experience the power and purity of Cosey’s work in black & white. You can also take a look at two ‘virtual expositions’ on this site for Jonathan 14 and Jonathan 15.
  • Cosey has always been very discreet about his stories, but this time he gave some details about this new story. The principal character is a 60-year old man. It is a romantic story, with elements of suspense. The story takes place in the period 1980-1990.

And good news for all fans of Cosey who cannot read french: the Mickey album will be published in an english (american) edition. I hope I can give you more details soon.

Pictobello 2016

2016_06_25_pictobello

Last Saturday, Cosey participated at Pictobello 2016 in Vevey (Switzerland). It is a festival where artists paint and draw on billboards, that are hung at several spots throughout the city, where they can be seen until 16 July. The pictures above were made during the works on Saturday. Work on the billboard was interrupted for collegial advice and for signing books for fans.

Hooliganism

2016_04_25_muurschildering_beklad

A photo taken from the train shows that Cosey’s 1991 wall painting in Morges has been demolished by graffitti hooligans. Let’s hope it can be restored.

Below a picture of the mural in better times.

Jonathan in Portugal

portugees_jonathan

Good news for Portuguese fans of Cosey: a selection of 10 Jonathan albums will become available in Portuguese. The newspaper Público and publisher ASA cooperate: for 10 weeks, every wednesday, readers of the newspaper can buy an edition of a Jonathan album for an extra € 5.50. The action starts 27 april and ends 29 june.

The ten albums in the series can be seen on the image above. I like the cover design with the full image, following more or less the design of the Intégrale albums.

Six Jonathan albums will not be translated, three of which have earlier been available in Portuguese: ‘La Privilège du Serpent’ seems to have been published in a Tintin collection (or journal) in 1981, ‘La saveur du Songrong’ and ‘Elle ou dix-mille lucioles’ were published in one album in 2009. So three albums remain unavailable in a Portuguese translation – let’s hope for a good result of this sales action to stimulate the publisher to fill the gaps.

Last year, ‘À la recherche de Peter Pan’ was published in Portuguese. This Jonathan action so soon afterwards shows that there is an audience for Cosey’s work in Portugal.

Carte Blanche BD Net

mickey_exlib_bdnet

Online comic shop BD Net is working on a collection called ‘Carte Blanche’: 53 playing cards will be made, each accompanying an album. It is a subscription scheme: you sign up for 53 albums and receive the playing cards with them.  This is Cosey’s contribution to the collection ( a ‘V’ is a ‘J’ in an english card game).

Click here to read more about it.
